Banaba Leaf Herbs have been used in the Philippines and India for Blood Sugar Control for years. Studies are also being done on those with cervical cancer and other metabolic disorders. The studies have been shown to be positive.
Banaba, known scientifically as Lagerstroemia, is a flowering tree that is native to the Philippines and India, where it has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for digestive problems, kidney inflammation and diabetes. The Medical Health Guide reports that banaba can grow up to 30 feet high, producing pink and lavender flowers and leaves that are 3 inches wide by 7 inches in length. The banaba leaves are often used in herbal preparations, as they offer health benefits.

Blood Sugar Control
Banaba leaves contain a compound called corosolic acid, which has been identified as one of the main agents for banaba’s glucose lowering effect. According to a study in the April 2008 issue of “Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice,” corosolic acid helps the body break down sugars and carbohydrates and send them out to the body as energy through a process known as glycolysis. Drug Information Online (DIO) explains that corosolic acid also helps to repair the connection between insulin and insulin receptors, easing the problem of insulin resistance. Banaba’s effects on insulin resistance make it an herb of interest in the treatment of obesity as well.
The corosolic acid in banaba leaves also makes a contribution to cancer treatment. Researchers at Changhai Hospital in Shanghai, China tested corosolic acid against human cervical cancer cells. The results, published in the November 1, 2009 issue of “Cancer Letters,” show that corosolic acid stimulates the release of cancer-cell-killing enzymes, resulting in cancer cell death. Not only has corosolic acid been shown effective against cervical cancer cells, but the DIO reports that leukemia, breast and liver cancer cells are also susceptible to its action.
Metabolic syndrome is explained by the American Heart Association as a group of conditions a person may have that increase susceptibility to heart disease and stroke. These conditions include high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and inflammation. Researchers at Mukogawa Women’s University in Nishinomiya, Japan tested banaba leaf extract against several metabolic syndrome conditions. They found that by the end of 10 weeks of treatment, blood pressure had been lowered, fat metabolism had normalized and the body’s inflammation levels had decreased, according to the published results in the November 25, 2006 issue of “Life Sciences.”
Human studies show that it can help lower blood sugar within 60 minutes by helping the transport of sugar into cells. It has been shown to help the glucose transporter proteins, especially GLUT4, which is active in fat cells and muscle cells. Improving metabolism of insulin within fat cells helps to correct leptin problems and food cravings that are typical in overweight individuals with elevated blood sugar. The typical human response is a 10-15% decrease in blood sugar within two hours of ingestion. The researchers conclude that banaba extracts standardized to corosolic acid “decrease fasting as well as postprandial blood glucose levels in humans.”
Blood Sugar Control: A Natural Diabetes Remedy?
The leaves also contain the minerals manganese and zinc. Extracts from the seeds have been found to have powerful antioxidant properties and are in fact being researched as a possible HIV treatment.
– Herbal medicine from the Philippines

Banaba herb has been used in the Philippines for blood sugar control. See diabetes for information on natural supplements and herbs that have an influence on blood sugar, including lipoic acid. One of the active ingredients in banaba leaf is corosolic acid and there has been some research done with it in Japan. I have not come across any human studies, but there has been at least one human study with corosolic acid that showed improvement in blood sugar control in type II diabetics. At this point it is difficult to predict the blood sugar response to a banaba supplement and it is difficult to know what dosage works best, how often to take it, or how it interacts with other supplements used for blood sugar control. We also don’t know how this supplement would interact with oral medicines used in diabetes and how it would interact with insulin. If you are a type II diabetic, discuss with your doctor regarding its use to see if this herbal remedy is appropriate for your particular condition.Buy Banaba Leaf Extract supplement, 250 mg per pill, 12 to 1 Extract 60 Capsules
herbs and nutrients involved in blood sugar control include cinnamon, fenugreek, chromium, and alpha lipoic acid. Extracts from banaba possess activities that both stimulate glucose transport into cells and inhibit adipocyte differentiation.
Blood sugar and diabetes research studies
The use of banaba for diabetes in the US is still very new. The dosage and how often one should take it and how it interacts with insulin has not been determined. The researcher was not aware of any studies combining metformin or other medicines with Banaba as of yet.

Antiobesity activity of extracts from Lagerstroemia speciosa leaves on female KK-Ay mice.
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol. 1999..
Lagerstroemia speciosa has been used as a folk medicine for a long time among diabetics in the Philippines. In the present study, female mice of the same strain showing remarkable body weight gain were used to examine the antiobesity effect of dietary banaba extract. Five-week-old female KK-Ay mice were fed a control diet or test diet containing 5% of a hot-water extract from banaba leaves instead of cellulose for 12 weeks. Neither group showed any changes in diet intake during the experimental period. Body weight gain and parametrial adipose tissue weight were lowered significantly in the banaba diet group. Blood glucose levels were not suppressed in the banaba diet group, but hemoglobin A1C was found to be suppressed at the end of the experiment. No effects on the serum lipids were observed, but the mice fed banaba extract showed a significant decrease, to 65% of the control level in total hepatic lipid contents. This decrease was due to a reduction in the accumulation of triglyceride. These results suggest that banaba had a beneficial effect on obese female KK-Ay mice.
